Even before the written word there were artists. The painters and the illustrators were the authors and photographers before there were books and cameras. In Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario, petrographs are still visible on the faces of rocks; illustrated journals of the first people. The visual arts let us see the beauty in nature from another perspective. The artist might catch what we miss. The artist of yesterday shows us how changed the landscape is today compared to yesterday, as in the example of the great dunes on Lake Michigan. We can even see flora and fauna that once existed and no camera can ever capture because they are now extinct. Art is something every culture since the beginning of, human history, shares. It is a way to express when there are no words. Few will dispute how empty our lives and society would be without it. Art reminds of what we have left to preserve and what we will be missing if we're not careful. Michigan Madonna by Greg Jaris. All rights reserved. Visual Arts News:
