Tawas, MI

From Great Lakes Wiki

Tawas is a great little tourist town that includes the two cities of Tawas City and East Tawas. It is located along the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway, which extends from Standish to Mackinaw City. Tawas was founded in 1855 after the Tawas Lighthouse was build to warn boats that they were at the entrance of the bay. Due to natural build-up of sand Tawas Point slowly extended to itself out to what once had been open water. The original lighthouse became of no real use to the mariners. A new lighthouse had to be rebuilt almost 3/4 of a mile southeast. The original lighthouse can still be seen as part of the Tawas Point State Park.

The Tawas area is an active town from summer to winter. Summer activities always include spending time on the beaches, parks, fishing, boating, sailing, camping, swimming golfing, and sightseeing. Winter is great for those who enjoy cross-country skiing and snowmobiling with over 90 miles of groomed trails to explore. For those who are not for the outdoor activities can spend time enjoying the downtown area shopping at Tawas's unique stores, boutiques and antique shops. Throughout the summer Tawas is host to numerous Arts and Craft shows for everyone to enjoy. And for the music lovers they can enjoy music on the bay, which takes place Monday nights during the summer.

Locals may tell about a unique feature in the water temperatures at Tawas Point State Park. Swimmers can enjoy warmer, calm waters on the Bay side of the point, or spend time in the cooler waters and big waves of Lake Huron on the other side.

Perchville is an event that takes place every year on the first weekend of February. During Perchville you can enjoy many unique activities including the polar bear dive where courageous individuals dive into the freezing the Lake Huron waters. Perchville got its start in 1950 as an ice fishing contest that you can still take part in today.

Tawas has something for everyone, especially the outdoor enthusiasts all year round. It is a great place to get away from all the stresses of work and enjoy some relaxing time on the beach.
