Michigan birds

From Great Lakes Wiki

Michigan is the home to over 351 species of birds. This includes birds that resident year-round in Michigan, and also those that migrant in only for the summer breeding season. Most of migratory bird species arrive in Michigan in the spring, build a nest and breed, and then return south for by the early fall. They spend the winter in the warmer climates of places as near as Texas and as far a way as South America.

Many different kinds of birds are found in Michigan. These include water birds like mallards, great blue herons, and Canadian geen seen on the great lakes and in other wet areas. There are also the many birds commonly seen at bird feeders, such as chickadees, hummingbirds, juncos, tufted titmouses, and blue jays. There are also birds that are only seen in the forest, such as Kirtland’s warbler. The Kirtland’s warbler is a very rare bird and is only found in the Jack Pine forest of the Lower Penninsula of Michigan.

Unfortunately, a few birds are no longer found in Michigan. The only bird completely extinct from Michigan is the passenger pigeon. Another species, the greater prairie chicken, is no long found in Michigan but is still seen in other states such as Wyoming. A few species, such as the ring-necked pheasant popular with hunters, and the starling which is hated by farmers, have been introduced by humans.
