Michigan Utility-Scale Wind Farms

Michigan is home to a growing number of utility-scale wind farms.

• In 1996, Traverse City Light and Power built the first utility-scale wind power generator on the Great Lakes.
• Bay Windpower built two wind generators on the grounds of the Mackinaw City wastewater treatment plant. The company was acquired by Mackinaw Power in 2003.

When new utility scale wind farms are being planned in Michigan, the developers need to request to interconnect with the electric transmission grid. These requests are made to the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO). MISO keeps track of all requests for grid interconnection in a separate area on its Web site. There, you can view the queue (that is, the waiting list) for interconnections, and you can see the map that shows where the requests come from.
