Manitou Music Festival (Glen Arbor, Michigan)From Great Lakes WikiA chamber music and jazz festival founded by Interlochen Arts Academy cellist, Crispin Campbell in 1993 on shores of Lake Michigan in Glen Arbor. "I just wanted to present concerts with my friends in a beautiful setting," says Campbell. "Chamber music is like poetry its the most intomate form of music making. It's not designed for large audiences. Somehow it seemed like playing chamber music in small venues surrounded by the natural beauty in Leelanau County was the right thing to do." It started with conversations between local artist, Suzanne Wilson of the Glen Arbor Art Association and Campbell. The festival has evolved to include a collaboration the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the form of a free concert every July. The annual event, started in 1998, attracts several thousand people and has become a traditional family picnic at the bottom of The Dune Climb. The festival has hosted Chicago keyboard artist, David Schrader; composer David Amram; singer-songwriter Claudia Schmidt; violinist, Richard Luby; jazz musician, Jeff Haas; and grammy-award winning pianist Paul Sullivan. The series runs from mid-July to mid-August in Glen Arbor and Leland. |
