 Lake Nipigon is nestled in the Canadian wilderness just north of Lake Superior. Its peculiar black-green sand beaches and abundant fish stocks have made the lake a Canadian National Park. Men who fish Lake Nipigon claim that the largest trout in the world swims in its deep, cold water. Due to its size and location, people sometimes assert that Lake Nipigon should be the sixth Great Lake, but either way the area is rich in history and wilderness.
GeographyLake Nipigon is located 110 km northeast of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada. It is the largest inland lake in Ontario. It sometimes claims to be the sixth of the Great Lakes. According to the Atlas of Canada, Lake Nipigon has a net area of 2,802 mi2 (4510 km2), a total area (including islands) of 3012 mi2 (4848 km2), and sits at an elevation of 853 ft (260 m).It has a maximum depth of 540 ft (165 m). It has 652 mi (1050km) of shoreline. The maximum surface temperature of the lake rarely exceeds 60°F (15°C). The lake freezes in late December and the ice breaks up in late April to early May. During the spring the wind comes from the north and then the rest of the year from the west to northwest. The average July temperature for the area is 59°F (15°C). To the south Lake Nipigon drains out through the Nipigon River into the Nipigon Bay which is part of Lake Superior. Although there are several islands in the waters of Lake Nipigon (10% of the total area) only five are noteworthy: Kelvin Island, Shakespeare Island, Geikie Island, Murchison Island and Logan Island.
