Currently hydroelectric power is the country's largest source of renewable energy. More than 2,000 hydropower plants operate in the U.S. alone. These plants use the water to spin turbines connected to generators. This approach uses the power of the water for mechanical energy. Some plants save up water in a seperate reservior over night, then use that water's power during the day, when more energy is needed.
