How many wind generators?

There is no known accurate source of information about how many small wind energy systems are being installed or planned for the Great Lakes region. A few thousand utility-scale wind generators in the Great Lakes Region are now either already in operation, being constructed, or in the planning stages for installation in the coming few years. You can get an idea how many utility-scale wind generators are being planned for installation in the Great Lakes Region, though. You can study the list of projects that have requested interconnection with the electric transmission grid that is being overseen, for the purpose of assuring unbiased regional management and open access to the transmission grid -- by the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO, pronounced MY-sew).

MISO keeps a list of all interconnection requests on its website, under the Planning tab. There, you can link to the Generator Interconnection web page, where you can view a spreadsheet that itemizes each proposed project, and you can view the most recent version of the map, shown below.

As you review this information, keep in mind that Ontario, New York, and Pennsylvania wind generators are not included in this map, but we know that they have several hundred utility scale wind generators in the works already. Also, some areas in the Great Lakes Region fall under the auspices of the PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland) regional transmission organization (RTO), and not MISO, so projects that will interconnect to the PJM grid (which could be in portions of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania), will not necessarily be indicated on the MISO map. New York State and Ontario also have their own transmission system operators.

This map has been annotated to provide some explanation of wind electric generation projects in the MISO queue, especially related to Michigan.
