Background

Great Lakes United is "an international coalition dedicated to preserving and restoring the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River ecosystem." It is an organization of 170 environmental citizen groups and 700 people from both the United States and Canada. Originally founded in 1982 on Mackinac Island, the group now has its main offices in Buffalo, New York and Montreal, Quebec.

Great Lakes United coordinates grassroots activists to maintain reviews of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Platform

Great Lakes United promotes action to assure:

  • Clean water and clean air for all
  • Better safeguards to protect the health of people and wildlife
  • A conservation ethic that will leave a healthy Great Lakes.

Publications

The organization puts out a yearly printed magazine called Great Lakes News and a complementary monthly e-bulletin, Between Editions.

Issue-based Task Forces

Actions are coordinated through several issue-based task forces:

25th Anniversary Meeting

GLU will be meeting to celebrate its 25th anniversary in Toronto, ON on June 15-17, 2007. Updates on this meeting will be posted in the future.
