The geology has had a major influence on the evolving culture of the Great Lakes region. The last ice age of over 13,500 years ago left the depressions for what is the Great Lakes today. The Lakes are still young by geology standards--5000 years old. Michigan 11,000 B.C. first hunters arrive, before the end of the last ice age. 100 B.C. - Hopewell Indians migrate from the Illinois River Valley to the Upper Great Lakes Region 1600s - First European people arrive, mostly from France. The fur trade was the main industry until it was exhausted by the late 1820s.
