In the year 1969 the River Cuyahoga caught fire near Cleveland, Ohio from an excess of oily pollutants on its surface. Though that particular section of river (and others) had caught fire many times before, the political climate of the time was not savvy with it. On the activist side was Randy Newman, who wrote the song Burn on, Big River to immortalize it.
