Vital Tips on How to Write a Thesis Statement for a Research Paper
A thesis statement is an important component to almost any type of paper- especially a research paper. The thesis statement is a way to summarize the reason why you are writing and gives you a direction to go in as you write. It also helps the reader understand what the purpose of your paper is as soon as they start reading it so they can have an easier time following what you’re saying to them with your research paper.
Coming Up with a Thesis Statement
As you’re working on your thesis statement, ask yourself what question your paper is exploring. Your thesis should be the answer to that question. Now, there are different ways to generate a thesis statement depending on the topic.
- A thesis statement for an assigned topic-
- A thesis statement for a topic that is not assigned-
Turn your assignment topic into a specific question and then compose one or two sentences to answer that question. That is your thesis.
Brainstorm a topic and then narrow it down to something more specific. Your thesis needs to answer a specific question, so think about what you want to say about your chosen topic. Take a position on the topic, use specific language, and make an assertion.
Keep in mind that strong thesis statements are specific, take some sort of stand, justify discussion, and express one main idea.
